This is War
There has been an interesting, and quite extreme, reaction from some quarters to Google's announcement that it will be search more secure.
What have Google done? In future, searches by authenticated (Google) users will all be undertaken using their SSL encrypted search. This changes whether the HTTP referrer header is sent and has an impact on search engine optimisation (SEO) and analytical data & strategies, which is explained well here.
The reaction from the marketing community has been strong and extensive.
It will be good to see how this develops, but it certainly won't be the last effect of tightening up on the privacy effects of our "always-authenticated" internet usage. Just masking referrer headers for some traffic, and not other traffic, doesn't really seem to be a solid privacy-based decision.
